Better Together is a nationwide campaign which aims to build support for such groups by encouraging the public to support them and make a difference in their communities.
The 2015 Better Together Campaign will be launched in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin on September 24, and will include the Better Together Video Competition, the Better Together National Roadshow, and the Charity Hero Award in association with the Volunteer Ireland Awards.
The Charity Hero Award is a lifetime achievement award honouring a volunteer who has made an extraordinary contribution to a good cause.
Breifne Earley, Pedal the Planet, Professor Eamon O’Shea of NUI Galway and manager of the Tipperary senior hurling team, and Jim Kavanagh, winner of the Charity Hero Award 2014, will speak at the launch.
Mr Earley has just returned from cycling 18,000 miles around the world, while Prof O’Shea of the School of Business and Economics at NUI Galway, is currently researching the economics of dementia, health care evaluation and rural ageing.
Mr Kavanagh has volunteered since the mid-1990s and has made his life’s work the alleviation of suffering for thousands of children, young adults, and the elderly in institutions and mental asylums across Belarus and Western Russia.
The first Better Together campaign was launched in 2010 by The Wheel, a support and representative body for the Irish community and voluntary sector.
The video competition offers Macra members an opportunity to elevate their club’s public profile, attract new supporters, raise funds, and win prizes.
In 2012, Clonakilty Macra received nearly 3,000 votes in the Volunteer Only category for a video showcasing their famous Random Acts of Kindness festival.
They then went on to impress a panel of judges who named them the overall winners.
They won a cash prize which they re-invested in the festival, which is now an annual event.
In 2013, both Glanmire and Coolaney Macra clubs were runners up in the video competition.
Groups are invited to submit a short clip to illustrate what their organisation does, why it matters to the community, how the public can support the group’s work, and how the organisation works to help make ‘Ireland Better Together’.
It can be a new or existing video, but must be no longer than two minutes.
Organisations must upload their video to YouTube or Vimeo before submitting it for entry.
A public vote will see a shortlist of nominees in various categories and the winners in each category will receive a prize.
