Karen Walsh: When your cows become a traffic hazard

Question: “My cattle recently broke out on to the public road and damaged a passing car. The driver’s car is badly damaged. 

I gave my insurance details to the driver and reported the accident to my insurer. Can you advise me if I will be held responsible for the damage?”

Answer: The owner of animals must take reasonable care to ensure that damage is not caused by an animal straying onto the public road.
