President praises Macra ‘neighbour’ initiative
In a message to Macra for ‘Know Your Neighbour Weekend’, on Saturday and Sunday, he said Irish people pride themselves on their strong sense of community.
“These are characteristics which still define us a people and as a society. In a modern and increasingly urbanised world, however, it can be very easy for neighbours to remain strangers and for people moving to new communities to become isolated and alone.
“Know Your Neighbour Weekend provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the importance of community; and the value of building and maintaining friendships and connections within our neighbourhoods,” Mr Higgins said.
The initiative, supported by Calor, is in its 10th year and will consist of events countrywide. Macra president Seán Finan said this is a chance for people to build friendships with their neighbours and have some summer fun.
A taste of the events to come was provided when Freemount Macra in Co Cork, with Calor, hosted a family fun-day last Saturday. More than 140 people attended.
