Macra news: North on board for neighbour initiative

The Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster have come on board to encourage young farmers in the North to host events, making this year’s know Your Neighbour an all-island initiative for the first time.

Roberta Simmons, president of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, and Northern Ireland’s minister for agriculture and rural development, Michelle O’Neill, were among those in attendance.

Sponsored by Calor, the 10th Know Your Neighbour Weekend will take place over the weekend of July 25 and 26.

Also supported by The Wheel, Irish Country Living — the Irish Farmers Journal, the initiative encourages people to get to know their neighbours.

While a packed schedule is planned for the official weekend, many Macra clubs across the country will host events across the summer, which will come under the scheme’s umbrella, from barbecues to family fun days and field evenings.

Last Friday, Terelton Macra hosted a barbecue to raise funds for West Cork Rapid Response in Foleys Bar.

On the day there were side shows, inter-club obstacle challenges and live music.

On Sunday, Crossmahon-Bandon Macra will hold a charity tractor run to celebrate the initiative.

Registration will take place at midday and later in the evening there will be a community barbecue with live music and a raffle.

There will also be a prize for the best-presented tractor on the day.

All money raised at the event will go to MS Ireland and the Bandon Area Special Children organisation.

On Friday, July 17, from 7.30pm, Berrings Macra will supply light refreshments to members of the Inniscarra community at the Mass rock.

Berrings thrives in keeping a tidy community and before the event takes place, Macra members will be tidying the Mass rock area with local Tidy Towns groups.

Freemount Macra will play host to the official National Know Your Neighbour field day on July 18 from 1pm on the Farm of Moses Roche.

The event will include a barbecue and a cookery demo with celebrity chef, Catherine Fulvio.

There will also be a DJ, games, and entertainment for all the family.

Know Your Neighbour events can be registered on , with packs containing t-shirts, caps, and posters, all courtesy of Calor, up for grabs.
