Food and drinks group calls for better access

The conclusion of balanced trade agreements to secure extra access in strategic growth markets at similar tariff levels to competitors is vital, says Food and Drink Industry Ireland.
Food and drinks group calls for better access

Chairman Colin Gordon, speaking at the Irish Pavilion at Expo Milan, said food producers need efficient and open markets domestically, across the single market and increasingly in international markets.

He had earlier welcomed the recognition in Food Wise 2025 of the strategic importance of agri-food to the country’s development. He said this was a clear demonstration that the food and drink sector is critical to Ireland’s economic growth and its social fabric.

“This is a huge opportunity and responsibility for the Irish food industry with one in seven jobs in the economy linked to agri-food,” he said.

Mr Gordon said it is vital now that every government department and agency works together to ensure its effective implementation.

“This will require the necessary funding and resources for the relevant state bodies and for the various initiatives outlined in the strategy,” he said.

“Industry will actively support the strategy, but will also monitor the implementation of key deliverables that have been identified.”
