Being admitted to hospital can be a daunting experience. On the one hand, there’s a sense of relief that whatever ails us is being dealt with.

On the other hand, it means coping with unfamiliar surroundings, people and food that often has a reputation for not being, well, the most appetising. Adults can for the most part, rationalise.

But when a child has to spend time in hospital, and especially over Christmas, it can be a seriously traumatic experience. Only 20 years ago, people knew very little about how much a hospital stay could affect a child’s development and wellbeing.
