Smart Appi for dairy sector

New computer software, to help milk processors forecast variations in milk supply and spot emerging trends, is the aim of a research collaboration between CIT, Glanbia, Dairygold, WIT’s Telecommunication Software and Systems Group and Teagasc.

The project, denoted Smart Appi, has attracted investment of almost 445,000 from Enterprise Ireland, as part of efforts to minimise uncertainty around the quality and quantity of milk from farms.

As farmers increase output, a key issue for processors is how to plan transport, refrigeration, processing, and finished product storage capacity. Already, there is a 10% variance, year-on-year, of milk supply, with weekly fluctuations throughout the year, and the research project will enable optimum sizing and assignment of processing capacity, and processing costs.

Sow’s life

It’s a sow’s life in France, where pig farm hygiene includes showers for sows, and an improved system for bathing them recently won an innovation award at the Space show in Rennes.

Made by the Asserva company, the Sani-clean automatic shower allows soaking, rinsing, sanitising, adding an anti-parasite treatment, and rinsing sows, without any intervention by pig farm staff.
