Opportunity for forest owners to meet with timber buyers

Forest owners will have the opportunity to meet with timber buyers in the coming weeks.

Timber Marketing Days will be held at Kildalton Agricultural College, Piltown, Co Kilkenny (August 26) and Mullingar Park Hotel, Mullingar, Co Westmeath (September 2).

The events are organised by Teagasc with the co-operation of the Irish timber industry and the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Forest owners will have the chance to meet with harvesting contractors and foresters to find out more about the timber selling process and the harvesting options available.

Teagasc says this will give forest owners a better appreciation of how thinning works.

It said feedback from forest owners had highlighted the need for a suitable forum to engage with key players involved in the harvest and purchase of timber.

Both events will facilitate forest owners who have timber for sale to make contact with buyers in their area.

These events will also be of great interest to forest owners whose forests suffered wind damage earlier this year.

Each day, the programme will start with an outdoor demonstration organised by the Irish Forestry and Forest Products Association.

Participants will have the opportunity to view the quality of timber required by Irish sawmills. This outdoor demonstration will be followed by an indoor presentation from Teagasc, the Forest Service and speakers from the forest industry.
