Bord Bia urges consumers to pick quality-assured bacon products
The message behind the trade board’s four-week campaign is to choose quality-assured ham and bacon when shopping as it is produced to Bord Bia’s highest standards and can be traced back to the farm.
Mintel consumer surveys show that in both the North and the Republic, bacon is the most commonly purchased type of meat.
Some 83% of Northern Ireland and 81% of Republic consumers had bought chilled bacon “frequently” in the 12 months prior to being surveyed. However, the meat’s popularity is also soaring with consumers globally, notably in the US.
“Ham and bacon is popular not only in Ireland but also throughout the world. The versatility and variety these products offer make them a staple in our diets,” said Michelle Brady of Bord Bia’s meat division.
Consumption of bacon is on the rise in the US, with 45% of Americans eating bacon at least twice a week, according to Harry Balzer, vice-president and chief analyst at the market research firm NPD Group.
“Currently, Bord Bia is running a four-week promotional campaign to encourage consumers to switch to ham and bacon with the Bord Bia Quality Mark,” Michelle Brady stated in the latest edition of Bord Bia’s Food Alert. The message is to choose quality-assured ham and bacon when shopping as it is produced to Bord Bia’s highest standards and can be traced back to the farm.
“A campaign targeting national media will be launched to coincide with St Patrick’s Day, which will highlight our long-established tradition and love of ham and bacon dishes.”
