As New Zealand milk production stretches processing facilities to the limit, very large quantities of buttermilk have been dumped by Fonterra, the country’s biggest dairy co-op.

This lake of buttermilk (pictured below) formed at Atiamuri in Waikato, after the by-product of butter making was hauled from Fonterra’s processing plants in Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

In addition, at least two tankers a day are discharging dairy by-product into the sea.
