Dawn Meats recipient of British environmental accolade
The awards are designed to find the greenest companies, councils and communities operating in Europe.
Dawn Meats competed against more than 500 other nominations to receive a Green Apple Environmental Award — the National Green Champion (Ireland) — at a ceremony in the House of Commons.
During 2012-13, it reduced water intake by 56m litres across four sites, reduced thermal energy consumption by 50 to 80% across multiple sites, constructed a seven-acre wetland and eco park and achieved 80-100% post consumer recycled content of packaging.
The company, headquartered in Grannagh, Co Waterford, employs more than 2,700 and supplies meat products in over 40 countries. Chief executive Niall Browne said Dawn Meats sees sustainability and traceability as key differentiators for consumers. “We have set ambitious sustainability targets for delivery by 2020, including a 50% reduction in our carbon footprint and reductions of 40% in water and energy consumption,” he said.
