Teagasc gives livestock farmers advice on maximising profit margin

Livestock farmers can make a similar profit margin per hectare from beef-bred dairy calves as from sucklers, but only off excellent grassland management systems.

Teagasc experts at yesterday’s National Beef Conference in Newpark Hotel, Co Kilkenny, noted that calves from early maturing Angus and Hereford sires now account for 25% of calves born from the national dairy herd.

As dairy farmers gear up for the abolition of EU milk quotas, Teagasc anticipates a significant increase in beef-bred calves.
