Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney has held out hope of improved grant schemes for dairy expansion and drainage.

“Hopefully, this will be a good news story in the forthcoming budget,” he said, during last week’s Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine debate on his department’s spending plans.

He said his department is considering ways to ensure TAMS money available from Europe can be drawn down. Farmers are not drawing down these grants, because they have to provide matching funding. Only €20m has been drawn down, out of €60m to be spent by 2015.
