If you can’t get finance from the bank or co-op to purchase fertiliser, can you sell store cattle to get cash? One store could buy you 1.5 to two tonnes of fertiliser, buying you time until mart prices rise, when grass becomes more plentiful.

Good ground that is well-limed and well-fertilised will carry one suckler cow on a half-acre. The rest of the ground can be closed for silage.
