Maximise grass growth in long summer days

Making the most of the long days in June and July, to grow as much grass as you can, is the cheapest way to feed your stock this winter, say Teagasc beef advisors.

If you can’t get finance from the bank or co-op to purchase fertiliser, can you sell store cattle to get cash? One store could buy you 1.5 to two tonnes of fertiliser, buying you time until mart prices rise, when grass becomes more plentiful.

Good ground that is well-limed and well-fertilised will carry one suckler cow on a half-acre. The rest of the ground can be closed for silage.
