As Christmas and the New Year approaches I had expected this week to be reporting a very dramatic fall off in cattle numbers at marts across the country.

While numbers are seasonally reduced the phrase that would best describe the turn outs this week is “very respectable”. Prices too remain “very respectable” driven to some degree by what a couple of mart managers called “the need for some men to turn cash into cattle”.

Starting in Thurles on Monday where Martin Ryan reported that “it was a nice trade, and up on all fronts”.
