Top horses on display at Belgooly

Visitors were treated to a show of top class horses at last Saturday’s Belgooly Show which required lengthy deliberations before the judges could name their supreme horse champion.

In contention were John Joe’s Brother, the champion hunter shown by Val and Laura Hyde, Ballymacoda; Ballard Playboy, the champion young horse shown by Seamus Lehane from Clonakilty; Brookfield Miss Lux, the champion brood mare shown by Kieran O’Gorman, Clonakilty; and Brian Daly, Newmarket’s champion foal. The award was eventually presented to Kieran O’Gorman.

In the indoor section of this popular south Cork show, there were over 900 entries for the baking, arts and crafts, and other domestic categories.

Show championship winners included the following:


Brood mare: Kieran O’Gorman, Clonakilty.

Foal: Brian Daly, Newmarket.

Young horse: Seamus Lehane, Clonakilty.

Hunter: Val and& Laura Hyde, Ballymacoda.

Working hunter: Rosemarie Ahern, Bandon.

Supreme horse: Kieran O’Gorman.

Ridden pony: Deirdre Burchill, Skibbereen.

Led pony: Breda and Bernadette Horgan, Macroom.

Working hunter pony: Claire Crawford, Corofin, Co Galway.

Supreme pony: Deirdre Burchill.


Champion beef animal: John and Kate Tait, Midleton.

Beef calf: Tony O’Leary, Ballincollig.

Supreme dairy animal: Brian Hayes, Kinsale.

Maiden heifer: Brian Hayes.

Friesian cow: Brian Hayes.

Friesian heifer calf: Pat Smith, Doneraile.

Best in dog show: Phillipa Mockler Murphy, Minane Bridge.

Best individual baking exhibit: Eileen Kelleher, Ballymartle.

Best dressed teddy bear: Sinéad Crowley, Ballinhassig.

Most suitably dressed lady: Anne Hayes, Belgooly.

Bonny baby: John D Crowley, Bandon.

Best dancer: Aliesha O’Shea, Belgooly.

Veronica Stuart lace trophy: Ellen Murphy, Kinsale.
