The Irish Hereford Breed Society is sponsoring a series of Hereford cross calf promotions in the Munster area, where they see their predominant customer base as the dairy farmer.

In a promotion aimed at dairy farmers, breeders have the opportunity to win €100 each for the best crossbred Hereford heifer and bull calf at four mart sales.

The promotion continued last week at Castleisland Mart, last Tuesday at Nenagh Mart, and will continue next Monday at Kilmallock Mart and next Tuesday at Kanturk Mart.

It started at Bandon Mart, where Denis Buckley from Donoughmore sold three calves for €1,164, and also won the €100 Hereford prize for one of them.

Tomas O’Donovan, Kilcrohane, Bantry sold two calves for €980, and also won the €100 Hereford prize for one of them.

At Castleisland Mart last Monday, Denis Nagle, Killarney, sold a calf for €440 and got the Irish Hereford Breed Society’s €100 prize.

Con Maloney, Abbeyfeale, got the €100 bonus when he sold a Hereford cross bull for €485.

At Nenagh Mart last Tuesday, local man Don Flannery sold his Hereford cross heifer calf for €500 — and got the €100.

Paddy Ryan got €400 for his bull calf, plus the prize.
