Teagasc director Professor Gerry Boyle has defended the organisation’s plan to examine the ecological cost of harvesting a genetically modified late blight-resistant potato.

“We are a knowledge-based organisation and we see it as our duty, without fear or favour, to ascertain the facts about technologies that are used right across the world,” he said.

Teagaasc has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a licence to conduct a trial.
