Pig farmers have until June 30 to apply for TAMS grant aid

Pig farmers constructing new loose dry sow accommodation, or converting existing housing, have until June 30 to apply for Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) grant aid.

Pig farmers have until June 30 to apply for TAMS grant aid

New housing may be needed because from Jan 1, 2013, pig producers will not be permitted to confine pregnant sows in individual pens or stalls during the period from four weeks after service to one week before the expected date of farrowing.

The grant aid will be allocated in two tranches of €5.4m, the first at the end of this month, and the second at the end of June. The works and paperwork must be completed and submitted to the Department of Agriculture by Dec 31, 2012.

Producers who wish to avail of the grant should apply for planning permission (where planning permission is required) for their proposal.

Full details of the building specifications for loose dry sow housing and the TAMS terms and conditions and application form can be downloaded from the “What’s New” section of the www.teagasc.ie/pigs website. Further information on housing options is available from Teagasc Specialist Pig Development Officers.
