TAMS will be kept open for next two years

AGRICULTURE Minister Simon Coveney has made a commitment to keep the reopened targeted agricultural modernisation schemes (TAMS) open for new applications for the next two years, until the current rural development programme ends.

However, the number of projects approved will be subject to funding limits.

And the sow welfare scheme will close for applications on June 30, because the new EU animal welfare standards for sows enter into force on January 1, 2013.

Mr Coveney said: “I am confident that the reopening of these schemes will enable many farmers in the sectors concerned to complete the necessary investment works in order to maintain competitiveness and introduce increased efficiencies on their farm, and so secure the future of their enterprises.”

Also now open for new applications are the dairy equipment scheme, rainwater harvesting scheme, and sheep fencing/handling scheme.

Revised application forms are available on the www.agriculture.gov.ie website.

According to the Department of Agriculture, changes in the requirement to state production levels will enable more farmers to participate in the dairy and sheep schemes.

Also, recent planning exemptions for construction of tanks are provided for in the rainwater scheme, and there is greater flexibility in relation to maps which must accompany applications.

As previously, a selection process will determine which applications will proceed to the approval process.

* The dairy equipment scheme provides grant-aid for purchase of milking machines, milk cooling equipment and certain ancillary items. The available grant rate is 40% up to a maximum eligible investment ceiling of €40,000 for milking machines and €25,000 for cooling equipment. Special incentives are provided for certain milk production partnerships.

* The rainwater harvesting scheme provides grant-aid for installation of equipment for rainwater harvesting and treatment at 40%, up to a maximum eligible investment ceiling of €25,000.

* The Sheep fencing/handling scheme provides 40% grant-aid for fencing and mobile handling equipment. The maximum grant is €4,000.

* The sow welfare scheme aims to assist pig farmers to bring their facilities up to standards required by new EU animal welfare rules. The 40% grant is available up to a maximum eligible investment ceiling of €300,000 (maximum grant is €120,000).
