Meat group to issue liver fluke report for cattle killed in their plants
Official figures for 2009 showed that 28% of all 1.5 million cattle sent for slaughter in Ireland had their livers condemned.
A 2010 Merial Animal Health indicated that the level of infestations may be even higher, revealing that over 80% of livers were condemned by one meat processor in Co Cork, where most of the cattle were slaughtered under 48 months and the vast majority of the condemnations were directly due to liver fluke.
