NEW nitrates rules prohibit application of fertilisers to land before dates ranging from January 12 to January 31, depending on location.

In counties Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow, the prohibition period is September 15 to January 12 for chemical fertiliser; October 15 to January 12 for organic fertiliser (other than farmyard manure); and November 1 to January 12 for farmyard manure.

In counties Clare, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath, the prohibition period is September 15 to January 15 for chemical fertiliser; October 15 to January 15 for organic fertiliser (other than farmyard manure); and November 1 to January 15 for farmyard manure. In Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim and Monaghan, the prohibition period is September 15 to January 31 for chemical fertiliser; October 15 to January 31 for organic fertiliser (other than farmyard manure); and November 1 to January 31 for farmyard manure. January 12, 15 and 31 are also the operative dates in these regions for minimum distances from water abstraction points for fertiliser spreading of any kind.
