Fine weather for harvest
Harvesting had been practically finished in the south by last weekend but areas in the Midlands and north were not completed.
However, the sunny weather has boosted that work and excellent progress is being reported.
Teagasc has noted, however, that the overall production of grain nationally is expected to be 1.9 million tonnes which is well back on the normal two million tonnes.
“Yields are generally satisfactory reflecting the good growing season and low disease status. However, take-all winter wheat is resulting in low yields.
“Prices are significantly up on last year and demand for straw is high. “Consequently, optimism in the tillage sector is much improved,” it said.
Against a background of ongoing global grain price volatility, Glanbia Agribusiness has announced an on-account payment of €135 per tonne for barley and €145 per tonne for wheat.
Glanbia said it will review grain prices again at the end of September/ early October with a view to setting final green grain prices.
