The decision to auction off a number of holiday homes in the Kerry town last month drew flak for its potential to depress property prices in the region. As it happened, there was a huge response to the sale, and all of the units were sold within days.

In the dying weeks of the year, Tom Spillane now offers a 52-acre farm at Templenoe, Kenmare, just five miles from the town.
