Midleton breeder John O’Grady makes it four out of five county beef bull championships

FOUR of the last five Cork county beef bull championships at Carbery Show have gone to Midleton breeder John O’Grady.

It’s an enviable record of consistency in the prestigious event which gathers qualifiers from all the earlier shows in the county for the final in Skibbereen.

Unfortunately for Cork horse breeders, the equally prestigious Cork county yearling championship was plundered at last week’s show by Co Clare exhibitor Vincent O’Callaghan of Lissycasey, Ennis. Successful exhibitors at last Thursday’s event in Skibbereen included the following.


Cork county beef bull: 1. John O’Grady, Broomfield, Midleton. 2. Albert de Cogan, Castlemartyr. 3. F and J Appelbe, Clonakilty.

Best Shorthorn Cow: Jimmy and Linda O’Donovan, Gortnamona, Schull.

Junior Holstein Freisian: Ronald Moore, Enniskeane. Reserve: Michael Lynch, Drimoleague.

Carbery group of three females: 1. Ronald Moore, Enniskeane. 2. Jerry Hegarty, Church Cross, Skibbereen 3. Richard Draper, Ardralla, Skibbereen.

Belgian Blue: Tim O’Donovan, Gurtnamuckla, Dunmanway. Reserve: John Cahalane, Castlehaven.

Hereford bull: 1. F and J Appelbe, Clonakilty. 2. Tom and Paddy Hickey, Ballydehob. 3. Albert de Cogan, Castlemartyr.

Aberdeen Angus: Albert de Cogan. Reserve: F and J Appelbe.

Charolais: Noel McSweeney, Toames, Macroom.


Cork county yearling: 1. Vincent O’Callaghan, Ennis, Co Clare. 2. PJ Lehane, Castleview, Clonakilty. 3. Michael McCarthy, Western Road, Clonakilty.

Skibbereen Credit Union champion foal: 1. Declan Fahy, Clonakilty. 2. PJ Lehane, Clonakilty.

Boland Memorial Championship: 1. Pat Keating, c/o Brigid McAuley, Killeagh, Co Cork. 2. Seamus Lehane, Clonakilty. 3. Julie O’Neill, Ballinhassig.

Best Donkey: Paul Kingston, Kilbarry, Dunmanway.
