AS the battle — and the confusion — over the sources and the solutions to the emission of harmful gasses into the environment continues, it appears the blame game keeps shifting and uncertainties outweigh the certainties.

Some of the hotly promoted eco-friendly fuels are believed not to be so eco- friendly after all when measure is taken of the carbon footprint of the production process. Just when thousands more are changing their transport to diesel engines — sales of diesel cars have rocketed in 2008 registrations — the pattern of diesel prices, relative to the cost of petrol, has been reversed, and the economies of driving the diesel engine vehicle have turned to a liability.

Now it has become the turn of the cow to carry the blame for at least 5% of all damaging methane gasses threatening the environment as they — naturally — process green grass into milk every day.
