Record-breaking sale for Carlow country house

KICKING off the new year sales was the possibly record-breaking result at auction for Beechy Park House at Rathvilly, Co Carlow.

Record-breaking sale for Carlow country house

The slightly faded, 18th century mansion and some 224 acres were auctioned by Knight Frank and Browne Corrigan for a very healthy €5.35 million.

This is good news for country house values, following a despondent market in 2007.

This property was last sold in the 1920s, for £5,000, and has been held by the Burgess family, the vendors, since then.

There were just three serious bidders in a full auction room, and the property was bought in trust by a firm of solicitors.

Joint agents for the sale were Robert Ganly and Aideen Gilsenan of Knight Frank, and Robert Corrigan of Browne Corrigan.

The identity and nationality of the buyer are unknown.
