DISCUSSIONS on reopening beef trade with Ireland are well advanced with authorities in Japan, which is the world’s second most valuable beef import market.

Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan told the Select Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food talks are at a similar stage with other countries, including Indonesia and the Philippines.

She said efforts by her department, together with Bord Bia and the Department of Foreign Affairs, led to the re-opening of the Saudi Arabian and South African markets. “Russia, Egypt and Algeria are also open, and there has been a partial opening of the United Arab Emirates market.”
