Meanwhile, a change in the regulations a few months ago moved the quad out of the farm tractor category and into the general purpose vehicle bracket for road tax. That has taken the cost of taxing the vehicle from €78 to €253.

Because of their engine capacity and potential speed, quads must be road taxed and covered by third party insurance if they are used in a public place. The FBD insurance company says that they have not had big demand for insurance cover for farm quads, probably because the majority of farmers used them only within the farm — in which case insurance cover would still be recommended.
