Booming success of Bantry’s show
The finals of national and provincial competitions attracted big interest, and the policy of the organisers in marrying these events with a broad-based programme of community and family orientated activities provided the blueprint for one Ireland’s most successful shows.
Show chairman Corney Buckley was delighted with the attendance. “There were people everywhere. It was fantastic,” he said.
A prize fund of €50,000, and the picturesque venue made available through the courtesy of Mrs Brigitte Wagner-Halswick, managing director of Rowa-Rowex Pharmaceuticals, were other important factors in the event’s success, which had G W Biggs as its main sponsor.
The top award in the €3,000 Murnane and O’Shea All-Ireland Three-Year-Old Filly Final was won by Hurst Show Horses, Tattygare, Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh. But the reserve championship honours stayed in west Cork, with exhibitor PJ Hegarty, Gaggin, Bandon.
There were further west Cork successes in the €3,000 Celtic Ross Hotel Irish Draught Foal Munster Championship with Helen Nyhan O’Driscoll, Reenascreena, taking the honours, and John Burchill, Rineen, Skibbereen, showing the reserve champion.
An added attraction in the cattle section this year was the Aberdeen Angus national championship. Noted east Cork exhibitor, Albert de Cogan, Killamuckey, Castlemartyr, Co Cork, took the overall honours.
