West Cork leads the tally for Bandon rosettes
Last Sunday at Bandon, Killarney exhibitor John Brosnan showed the champion Shorthorn. A week earlier, Seamus Lehane, Clonakilty, had shown the champion horse at the Kingdom County Fair in Tralee — the first big show of the year, which attracted long-distance exhibitors such as Paddy Downes, Kilrush, Co Clare, runner-up exhibitor in the horse championship.
Timothy Kirby from Duagh kept the dairy championship prize in the kingdom, with John Curtin, Kilmallock, Co Limerick, taking the reserve rosette.
But David Hegarty, Bandon took the beef championship home across the county bounds, edging out Timothy Corridan, Fedamore, Co Limerick.
Another west Cork exhibitor, Martin O’Sullivan, Leap, won the pony championship in Tralee with Little Blue, a 12-year-old brood mare.
West Cork exhibitors kept most of the prizes at Bandon within the region.
Local rider Rosemarie Ahern did a great job on Aquila, the five-year-old mare which won the lightweight hunter and working hunter classes and the supreme ridden hunter championship for owner Brian Mangan and breeders Paul and Jan Turfery, Drinagh. The chestnut is by Quiletto out of a Mr Lord mare.
