Breeder Bowe’s filly wins Limerick Lady title
The title was won by J J Bowe, Kilteely Stud, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, with an unnamed filly which he bred. The filly is by Porter Rhodes, out of Ghareeb Sky.
Bowe won the same competition in 1994 with the champion’s grandmother, which also won the Limerick Matron title the following year. “I’m delighted,” said Bowe.
Abbey, by Golden Trump (RID) out of Killinure Beauty (TB) by Looking For (TB), won the reserve championships for breeder/owner Mary Corcoran, Killinure, Tullow, Co Carlow. An unnamed filly by Grange Bouncer (RID) out of Slieve Bloom Katie (RID) by Blue Henry (RID), bred and owned by Edward Delahunty, c/o Cloneyhea Equestrian Services, Mullinahone, Co Tipperary, took the third prize.
In fourth was Clonakilty Agricultural College’s contender, Clonakilty Campus, which is by Big Sink Hope (TB) out of Marcot (ISH) by Hallodri (TB). The filly was bred by J J Harty, Castlemartyr, Co Cork, who won a previous Limerick Lady title with the filly’s dam.
Though held under the auspices of the Traditional Irish Horse Breeding Society, this year, sponsorship of the Limerick Lady and Matron championships was provided by the Irish Horse Board, with support from the Irish Farmers’ Journal.
Hurst Show Horses, Lisbellew, Co Fermanagh, took the Limerick Matron title with the six-year-old exhibitor bred Tattygare My Fair Lady (ISH) by Star Kingdom (RID) out of Golden Cameo (ISH) by Cidrax (TB), in foal to Flaming Feather (TB). Reserve honours went to owner Gerard Grace, Rusheen, Kiladysart, Co Clare, for Rusheen Star (ISH) by Big Sink Hope (TB) out of Aghowle Lady (ISH) by Kinghaven (TB). It was bred by Maureen Mescall in Co Clare.
Jonah Wragg, Kildimo, Co Limerick, took the hunter championship, with Knight Owl, a five-year-old grey, while Seamus Lehane, Ballymacowen, Clonakilty showed the champion young horse, the Galway Guy.
Tribute was paid to Joe Clarke, Newtown, Castletroy, of the Limerick Show Society, who died in June aged 92.
