THERE are signs that the worst of the downward slide in beef prices may be over, for the moment at least.

After the past three weeks of heavy price cuts, there is a steadier tone to the trade at the factories this week for steers and heifers, the supply of stock is beginning to tighten, and cow prices have commenced to recover some of the losses of recent weeks.

For a change, the outlook is more positive for cattle farmers, with the expectation that the supply will tighten further over the coming weeks — through most of August — and prices will stabilise.
