ONLY 626 people are in the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) in the South and East, and Rural Affairs Minister Éamon Ó Cuív has expressed disappointment at low uptake.

“I believe that we must ask ourselves some serious questions about why there isn’t a better take-up on the scheme in this region, as a large number of farmers in this region are still in receipt of Farm Assist”, he said.

He said farmers on moderate incomes can improve their situation radically in the RSS, while providing essential services in their community. In the South and East, the RSS is available through 17 rural development bodies in Munster and south Leinster.
