€3,400 for Kilmallock baby beef
The bullock, winner of the class award for the best baby beef bullock, was exhibited by William Gubbins, Cush House, Kilfinane, Co Limerick. Weighing 760 kgs and winner of the reserve championship of the show, he was sold to Gerard Gallagher, Carrigart, Co Donegal for €3,400.
The overall champion of the show was a Charolais bullock that scaled just over one tonne. The bullock, winner of the class award for best bullock any age was exhibited by Seamus Neary, Troyswood, Co Kilkenny. It weighed in at 1,035 kgs and was purchased by Tom Moore, Kilmallock for €3,000.
There was a very good turnout of show cattle, which met with strong demand.
The principal awards and prices were:
Heifer with no permanent teeth: A red Limousin heifer weighing 785 kgs and sold by Frank Burke, Croom for €1,720 to David Wharton, Birr, Co Offaly.
Bullock, two teeth: A Belgian Blue bullock weighing 765 kg sold by Frank Burke, Croom for €1,900 to David Wharton, Birr, Co Offaly.
Heifer, two teeth: A 665 kg Limousin heifer sold by Tim Hannon, Ballyfolin, Kilfinny, Adare, purchased by David Wharton for €1,150.
Cow: A Limousin cow weighing 770 kgs by Mary Hannon, Ballyfolin, Kilfinny, Adare, purchased for €1,100 by Paddy Gleeson, Cappamore.
Numbers of cattle on offer are easing off at the mart sales, with entries for next week’s sales expected to be light. Prices are steady for the quality cattle at last week’s trade at most of the sales but trade appears more difficult at some centres, with fewer buyers for plain cattle.
