MARTS: THERE was no change in the average price paid by factories for cattle last week, which in general returned 6c/kg (2p/lb) above the quoted prices to producers.

Bullock supplies to the plants dropped by 1,000 head to 13,367 head, 1,300 head lower than the same week in 2005. At 32,495 head, the total intake at the factories was 2,500 head higher than 2005. Heifer supplies were up 1,000 head on last year and cows were 1,800 head higher.

The price variation between factories for similar type cattle widened with R4L bullocks varying from 102p/lb in the south to almost 108p/lb in the north west, while the national average was just under 104p/lb and similar to the previous week.
