GM symbol should appear on labels

The Consumer Liaison Panel of the Department of Agriculture and Food, chaired by the broadcaster Marian Finucane, is to explore the use of a symbol on labels for GM produce.

Certain foods containing GM products and animal feed containing GMOs are on the Irish market.

Members of the Committee raised questions about the size of the labels used on these products to indicate the presence of GMOs.

Marian Finucane said the panel considered effective labelling an essential tool in consumer choice and that the development of a symbol as a clear method of identifying GM produce should be looked at.
