TEAGASC has estimated the fall in winter cereal acreage at 25%, caused by poor sowing conditions in October and uncertainty due to the Single Farm Payment Scheme.

Most winter cereals have come through the winter well, and have good plant and tiller counts.

By mid-March, up to 40% of spring barley was sown in some areas, but very little in other areas.
