ENTERPRISE Ireland was challenged last night to intervene and prevent the closure by Dairygold Co-op of the Galtee pig slaughter line at Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

Former Food Minister Ned O’Keeffe, TD, who made the call, said the issue was a national one, requiring the intervention of the food division of Enterprise Ireland, which had invested substantial grant aid in the Galtee Foods plant in Mitchelstown over the years. It had also encouraged farmers to expand pig numbers, guaranteeing a modern facility with a slaughtering capacity for 12,500 pigs per week and a licence to export to the US market.
