Farmers’ markets go hi-tech
It launched a web-based guide to farmers’ markets for consumers and producers.
Current information on market locations and the benefits and expansion opportunities of farmers’ markets are featured on the website.
The guide will serve as a one-stop-shop for local producers interested in setting up a farmers’ market in their own locality.
Farmers’ markets are growing in popularity, allowing local producers the opportunity to sell their goods directly to consumers.
They are becoming an important source of extra income for farming families while providing the consumer with an alternative shopping experience.
Muiris Kennedy, Client Services Director, Bord Bia, said it actively supports the development of new routes to market, including farmers’ markets, for the benefit of small food producers.
Farmers’ markets act as natural incubation units for the emergence of new speciality food producers, giving them direct access to consumers.
“In addition, farmers’ markets add to the regional dimension of Irish food and are significantly important in our quality food image,” he said
Currently, 22 farmers’ markets are in operation around the country.
