Horse and bull success story
Qualifiers from 11 shows lined up in the Cork County beef bull (sponsored by Bank of Ireland) and yearling (sponsored by AIB) finals.
The top bull was John O’Grady’s 22 months old Greenhill Trounchen Limousin, which he qualified at his local Midleton Show.
The big yearling prize went to Clonakilty, with P J Lehane’s bay ‘The Villain’, sired by Ricardo Z, having qualified at Bandon.
“We had a fantastic day,” said Carbery Show Secretary Yvonne O’Regan, reporting a large attendance and entries galore for 230 classes, a relief for the army of organisers after last year’s event had to be cancelled, giving way to construction work on the Skibbereen relief road.
But this year, it was back to the Showgrounds, for a programme of activities organised by a committee headed by Jimmy Sheehy, chairman, which upheld the tradition of the event which is over a century old.
East Cork exhibitors did well in the cattle classes, with Albert de Cogan, Castlemartyr, gaining most points.
John and Eddie O’Flynn, Tullymurrihy, Ballinascarthy, took the award for the champion dairy cow, while the Cork Marts Cup for the best beef cow went to Peter and Marion O’Connell, Raceview, Knoppogue, Mallow.
The hunter championship went to Cloneyhea Equestrian Service, Mullinahone, Co Tipperary.
