Walsh EU role would benefit farm sector

AGRICULTURE Minister Joe Walsh could end up in Brussels as EU farm commissioner.

If he gets the job, and it is still a big if, Irish farmers could interpret his turn of good fortune as a bonus for the sector.

While his elevation would bring a sympathetic voice to the EU, Irish farmers recall that it was Ray MacSharry during his tenure as commissioner who ushered in the first radical reshaping of the sector.
