THERE has been a strong start to the beef trade for 2006, as competition for cattle supplies continues to push price upwards and consumer demand remains firm.

While the supply of cattle to factories has been increasing again this week, slightly easing the market pressures on factories, any effect on cattle prices paid to farmers has been marginal.

Farmer optimism for a continuing firm trade over the coming weeks appear to be soundly based.
