HAWTHORN Villa Stud, the property of the late auctioneer, Sean Twomey of Bandon, Co Cork, is to take the short, sharp, shock route at auction on November 24.

Joint selling agents are Michael Barry of Property Partners and Dick Barry and John Twomey of Twomey Crowley.

According to Mr Twomey, there were a number of interested parties in the private treaty sale of the property, and they’ve decided to shorten the process by going to auction.

The pre-auction guide price is €2.5 million.

A stud farm of these proportions is rare in the strong farming hinterland of Bandon, where the cow is queen.

According to Michael Barry, you’d have to know the equine business before you could appreciate the quality of what’s on offer.

“You’d have to be into horses to appreciate the quality and high standard of this property.”

“You could eat your dinner off the floor, and the amount of post and rail fencing put up over the last 20 years is astonishing.”

Hawthorn Villa includes an impressive five-bedroomed house, a stable yard, farmyard and 75 acres.

The late Sean Twomey was a director of the National Stud, and he built up a big reputation for breeding top quality bloodstock, including standing the highly rated Tagula at stud.

His son, Paddy Twomey, is continuing the family tradition. He was the purchaser earlier this year - for a sum in excess of €2.5 million - of the 253 acre Dromard House in north Tipperary.

This property was described by joint agent, Harriet Grant of Ganly Walters, as very suitable for horse breeding.
