IFA threatens social partnership accord

THE IFA warned yesterday that it cannot support a new social partnership agreement unless Environment Minister Dick Roche amends the nitrates measures to what it termed practical and workable regulations.
IFA threatens social partnership accord

IFA president Padraig Walshe issued the warning as regulations governing the nitrates directive came into force, except for a section dealing with phosphate limits which have been deferred by Mr Roche for a short period pending the provision and study of further scientific information from Teagasc.

Mr Walshe said partnership is a two-way street and the Government was introducing highly damaging legislation that would do nothing to improve water quality, which is the objective. The regulations are unworkable and damaging to all farmers, including 50,000 farmers who participate in the Rural Environment Protection Scheme.
