Rise in number of pilot organic farms

THE number of pilot organic demonstration farms is to be increased from the seven that were operated in 2004 to 12 this year.

Food and Horticulture Minister Brendan Smith revealed this when he presented national certificates and diploma awards to graduates of An t-Ionad Glas Organic College in Dromcollogher, Co Limerick, yesterday.

He said the pilot project, which was very successful last year, involved his Department in conjunction with Teagasc. The response was very encouraging. The open days were well attended and the information provided by the host farmers was very useful.
