Sowing organic seeds for success

Dublin: Superquinn has dedicated 140 acres at Ballyboughal in north county Dublin to growing organic fruit and vegetables for the supermarket group.

The land is in transition stage and is due to get organic certification later this year. It is registered with the Organic Trust.

Donnelly Fruit and Veg, the group’s sole suppliers, are recruiting growers interested in growing organically.

The farm has housing for 60 cattle.

In the past two years, demand for organic produce has doubled in a number of Superquinn shops.

The group sells over 200 organic foods and groceries.

Deputy chairman Eamonn Quinn said the challenge is to be able to guarantee consistency of produce at a reasonable price.
