DAIRY co-ops were urged yesterday to insist on giving farmers’ direct shareholding in the €1.8 billion-turnover Irish Dairy Board, which exports dairy products to over 90 markets worldwide.

Pat O'Rourke, president, made the call in his address to the annual general meeting of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association in Limerick.

Stressing that farmers should take firm control of the Irish Dairy Board, he said they will be better able to control their destiny if they control the levers of marketing.
