Shamrock is no longer a cash crop

THE wearing of the green has waned away, and regulations against sending rooted plants in the post have also downvalued our once valuable shamrock crop.

Now, shamrock seed has to be imported from Canada, due to loss of interest in our national symbol plant here.

Irish horticulturists have come in for some criticism for not preserving the symbolic herbage which, it is claimed, St Patrick used when teaching the lesson of the Holy Trinity.
