Sugar growers hit by quota cut

SUGAR growers were hit by a further reduction in their quota for the coming season yesterday when EU governments agreed to a European Commission proposal for a one-year cut of 13.6% in sugar, isoglucose and insulin syrup production.

This will mean a reduction for Irish growers of 11.55%, higher than the industry expected.

Martin Ryan, director of Agri business with Irish Sugar, said they thought the cut would be less than 10%.
